This past Saturday at UFC 281,newly crowned middleweight champion Alex Pereira (7-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) battled back to defeat Israel Adesanya in Round 5, winning the 185-pound title at Madison Square Garden.
The former kickboxers frequently struck the mat during the bout, although it was mostly fought on the feet. In Round 3, Adesanya was successful in establishing strong top control on the mat, which had professional grappler Chimaev drooling at the prospect of the stylistic matchup.
Khamzat Chimaev (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) appears to be moving up to middleweight after failing to make welterweight in his previous fight at UFC 279 by a whopping 7.5 pounds. He plans to challenge the champion on Jan. 21 at UFC 283 in Rio.
